This year marks 100 years since the date greyhound racing began in the UK.
Their Story
On 24th July 1926 the first race track officially opened in Belle Vue Manchester.
Today there are just 18 remaining race tracks from over 200 in UK.
There is no legal limit to the amount of greyhounds a professional trainer can keep.
The result; massive neglect and mass disposal of greyhounds due to an industry that is self governing and has deep conflict of interest, and are failing to find homes or rescue spaces for 8000 greyhounds that become inactive each year.
Each year an additional 6000 greyhounds from the 16000 bred in Ireland go unaccounted for 'presumably culled' with another 6000 imported for British racing.
Today - we can verify that;
1) It is legal to kill a Greyhound with a captive bolt gun
2) It is legal for trainers to send their dogs to countries with no animal welfare regulations and to be bred from until death - British raced dogs are found in Pakistan, China and Spain.
3) It is legal to destroy greyhounds when they stop making profit
4) 6000 greyhounds go unaccounted for from 16000 that are bred in Ire due to the demands of British greyhound racing.
Greyhound rescues are bursting to the brim and greyhounds are backing up in trainers kennels - this is a welfare crisis
We estimate over one million greyhounds have died due to racing since 1926
It must end now
