RTE investigates - the greyhound racing industry
What the greyhounds have been waiting for for so long. A true insight into their plight. Eternal gratitude to Ireland's national broadcaster RTE and their programme 'RTE Investigates'. https://www.rte.ie/player/movie/rt%C3%A9-investigates-- greyhounds-running-for-their-lives/104051751967
In an investigation aired on RTE One, Wednesday 26th June 2019 the disturbing reality for racing greyhounds was revealed.
The pro racing community claim we lie, well here you have it. We have maintained throughout the last 7 years that the bolt gun is actively being used, here is your proof.
Everyone involved in racing and those 'rescues' who protect abusers hold your heads in shame. The blood of 6000 puppies every year is on your hands
In the documentary greyhounds were witnessed being dragged against their will whilst clearly petrified into abattoirs where they were then shot in the head and left to suffer, writhing in agony and slowly dying alone.
The media has been quick to condemn -
6,000 underperforming greyhounds are being killed in this country every year, with dogs being shot for as little as €10, a shocking documentary reveals. An investigation into the industry, which received €16.8m in Government funding this year, reported that 16,000 greyhounds are born in this country each year. According to a business analysis report from 2017, which was commissioned by the Irish Greyhound Board, some 5,987 of these are killed because they fail to make qualification times or their performance declines.
'RTÉ Investigates' laid bare the massive over-breeding in the industry as it reported it is estimated that 1,000pc more dogs are bred each year than are needed to sustain the industry. The documentary 'Greyhounds, Running for Their Lives' revealed how half of the 30 licensed Irish knackeries contacted said they'd be willing to kill greyhounds for as little as €10 to €35 each. In shocking undercover footage, the programme shows four greyhounds being killed and dumped in a skip. In one disturbing scene, a dog is seen writhing in agony after being shot with a single bullet to the back of the head. This is despite assertions by the Department of Agriculture - which licenses and polices knackeries - that "dogs, including greyhounds, are classified as a Category 1 animal and cannot enter a Category 2 plant (knackery), dead or alive. Euthanasia of greyhounds or other animals ... is not approved", according to RTÉ. The programme also explores how the Dáil was told that just six greyhounds were exported to China since 2016 despite evidence of 20 Irish greyhounds being sent there, where they have ended up in breeding labs to source dogs for the underground dog-racing scene there.
Irish Independent
Here is a particularly gruesome riddle: When is a dog not a dog? The answer, according to an extremely disturbing, eye-opening report, is when it’s a greyhound. Under Irish law, these lean and hungry creatures are not classified as dogs at all, but as farm animals. Perhaps they are impressive at pest control, or very good at pulling tiny ploughs, because otherwise it makes no sense. No other farm animals would be treated so appallingly. Long before RTÉ Investigates: Greyhounds Running for their Lives (RTÉ One, Wednesday, 9.35pm) has ended, you watch searing evidence of the unimaginable scale of cruelty that comes with treating greyhounds as something less than dogs.
Overbreeding in Ireland, estimated at 16,000 born each year, creates a massive surplus of greyhounds, for a racing industry in obvious freefall. Owners, race attendance and advertising have fallen in number by roughly half in recent years. Is it due to desperation, then, or abomination, that almost 6,000 healthy, “under-performing” dogs are killed every year?
As farm animals, greyhounds fall under the remit of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, which allocates close to €17 million of taxpayers’ money to the Irish Greyhound Board (IGB), the organisation that oversees racing, gambling and welfare. The IGB, which made a confidential report public once RTÉ had gained a copy, has been aware of the scale of the problems facing the industry for some time. Those include missing dogs, doping, unreported international trade, and the suffering and malicious slaughter of animals.
If Conor Ryan’s report seems exhaustive, it may be because damning evidence is not hard to find. Prominent Irish trainers have been charged with doping offences but, with little meaningful sanctions, recidivism is rife. Mutilated dogs are plentiful, their ears hacked off or burned with acid to prevent identification, because, one rescuer explains, “he’s just been a failed racer”. The IGB-commissioned report described a greyhound population that is “out of control”, where widespread culling “could threaten the very existence of the industry” and action was needed to prevent “below-cost dumping of dogs in the UK, which is ultimately underpinned by the Irish taxpayer”. (We see Gerard Dollard, chief executive of the IGB, quibble with the figures on Claire Byrne Live.) The programme easily lifts the lids on hare coursing practices, filming unsanctioned meetings week after week on Whiddy Island, attended by leading figures in the community. But it is most disturbing when it follows the consequences of dumping surplus dogs or of clandestine sales beyond the UK. When the transportation of 24 Irish dogs to the infamous Canidrome in Macao was exposed in 2016, the IGB admitted “huge reputational damage”.
When the picture here freezes – but not the soundtrack – as one dog in China is hacked to death, or when it keeps rolling as another squealing dog is boiled alive, you wonder what reputation anyone involved has left to lose. Closer to home, the trade in knackering is so flagrant that a camera captures the full sight of a greyhound shot in the head, and its collar returned to the waiting owner, while the animal writhes on the ground for several minutes until its death. Greyhound racing, like the IGB itself hopefully, is right to worry for its future, because it depends on drawing new fans and on its significant government subsidy. To put it another way, that is our money, those are our dogs. Ireland, this commendably revealing programme reminds you, is one of the last eight countries that still allows greyhound racing. Maybe it’s time to put this sorry affair out of its misery. Irish Times
Following 'RTE investigates' contacting the IGB for comment; a report from 'Preferred Results Ltd' has been released by the IGB after they were forced to do so. The report was originally deemed strictly confidential.
The report announces shocking and newly released figures that the public may find highly disturbing, including estimated numbers of puppies and dogs culled between 2013 and 2015 whilst it takes into account the Irish bred dogs exported to the UK, and also the minority used for coursing
Please act now - write to the following contacts demanding that greyhound racing is no longer eligible for state funding and a ban on Greyhound racing with a phase out of 36mths is introduced, both with immediate effect!

Greyhound Derby Protest
Only three weeks to go - are you joining us?

Politicians in Chile are today debating a possible ban on greyhound racing in the country.
Please show your support by signing the petition below and emailing “Stop Galgueros” to felix.gonzalez@congreso.cl,sebastian.alvarez@congreso.cl,josemiguel.castro@congreso.cl,cgirardi@congreso.cl,mjhoffmann@congreso.cl,diego.ibanez@congreso.cl,amaro.labra@congreso.cl,fmeza@congreso.cl,cmorales@congreso.cl,catalina.perez@congreso.cl,hugo.rey@congreso.cl,gaston.saavedra@congreso.cl,sebastian.torrealba@congreso.cl
Outlining the cruelty of greyhound racing, animal rights group Libera Chile stated: “Greyhounds are exploited and enslaved and trained in a way that negatively affects the physical and mental integrity of the animals - practices that incur cruelty and abuse. Dogs are subjected to hard training, stimulated with drugs to achieve greater speed - drugs that are disguised as treatments or vitamins - and whose consequences are sometimes fatal, with irreversible damage to their internal organs, such as the liver for example.”
The group added: “The lifespan of a greyhound used in racing is less than 3 years. When their bodies are destroyed and can run no more, they are used for reproduction, and if they do not fulfil this purpose, they are mostly cruelly discarded: sacrificed or abandoned, tied up so they die by starvation, hanged or burned, agonising for hours. Greyhounds are punished when they no longer fulfil the lucrative ends - they are punished as a way to appease the frustration of their owners.”

Caged has received reports as follows from a number of residents in Mr Whelans area!
OPEN Letter to GBGB, RSPCA and the Greyhound Forum.
Dear all
Today Caged have received numerous reports from residents who live in the same vicinity as Richard Whelan, the banned greyhound trainer whose 10 raced dogs were routinely given a wide range of dangerous and illegal drugs including pig sedative, anti maleria drugs, Viagra, Minoxidil and non veterinary prescribed norethisterone.
We have been advised by several of Mr Whelans neighbours that they have had ongoing concerns about cruelty to additional dogs under his possession.
The allegations made, involve further greyhounds at present being confined for 24hrs per day in a small breeze block building in Mr Whelans back yard.
We are told that numerous neighbours have made complaints to the RSPCA and no action has been taken to date.
Given Mr Whelans previous history of drugging dogs, this case should extend above the AWA2006 Five freedoms, it is not only about shelter, food, water and other basic needs, but also about the susceptibility of these dogs whilst in the possession of someone who has a known history of exploiting and endangering the welfare of so many dogs whilst working within a 'regulated' industry.
If the GBGB are unable to lawfully seize dogs, we would like to know why you are not taking court action under the AWA2006 to prevent all GBGB banned trainers 'who have seriously breached the' Welfare of racing greyhounds regulations 2010', from owning 'any' dog.
We also believe you should take responsibility for the welfare of any greyhound that has been bred solely to benefit the greyhound racing industry, whether registered, or retired.
We would like to know whether the GBGB or the RSPCA will further investigate this case, and of any action taken in due course.
This letter will be open, and shared on social media as the general public are entitled to be informed of the Greyhound racing industry's policies, whilst they are invited to gamble or attend greyhound racing tracks.
I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
Kind regards
Another month has passed; another month of suffering and bullying at the tracks. Still no sign of that ever allusive welfare.
150 falls were recorded in the results for May; this video shows around half of them. Bear in mind that in addition to falling, many other greyhounds 'checked badly', finished lame or DNF (did not finish).
Please share; make people aware.

Candy Cane Rescue
Kerry of Candy Cane is now in China.
The last time she went she saved 26 dogs from meat markets but to save more Candy Cane need to clear their debts. Please, if you can help Candy Cane, use PayPal rescue@candycanerescue.org or Candy Cane’s bank account or the donate button.
If you can give up the price of a coffee, a pint or a takeaway to help them clear their debts it would make such a difference to Kerry’s trip.
There’s no way she won’t save dogs while she’s there, even though it will be difficult for them financially so any donations will help massively.
Greyhound Data endorses Chinese greyhound racing
Has Tony Gallagher part owner of Greyhound Data, seen an opportunity to make money from Greyhounds being sent to, or already existing in China?
Your views please.

Exposing exports to China
We continue to expose the export of greyhounds to China, and whilst profiteer Tony Gallagher cherry pics the extremely rare high end breeding facilities in China for his 'greyhound database' we will continue to expose the conditions the majority of the breeding farms in Mainland China have. Pro racers claim the dogs live like royalty, our evidence shows otherwise. Look at our website for images of greyhounds & their pups living in concrete cages, do the pro racers really think it's acceptable to send dogs to China? Of course they do because its another avenue to exploit the dogs to make more money.
Cagednw are finding many greyhounds from the UK on the data base in mainland China & are bring them home. An example are Frisby Barney and Droopys Dale. Both lads are Irish bred greyhounds and barney raced on 9 U.K. tracks and won the Peterborough derby, yet he was still sent to China .Both lads are now safe in the U.K.

Project X
DISGUSTING KENNEL CONDITIONS WILL LEAD TO ANIMAL WELFARE PROSECUTION
'Caged Nationwide’s “Project X” has produced video evidence of disgusting and unsafe kennel conditions that amounted to conditions which demonstrated unnecessary suffering to dogs and a failure to ensure dogs welfare.
Caged Nationwide have been investigating conditions in kennels belonging to Jill Llewellin at Blythe House Farm, Leek Road, Weston, Staffordshire.
There was also evidence of unlicensed kennel hands being employed at the site. Caged Nationwide can now reveal for the first time that they have instructed solicitors to bring a private prosecution for the offences revealed and that this is the first time that they a campaign group has been able to take such action.' - James Parry https://www.dangerousdoglaw.co.uk/dangerous-dog-legal-experts.html
Ms Llewellin is a registered greyhound trainer and owner who regularly races at Belle Vue and Nottingham race tracks and is widely fated as being one the industry’s stars, having finished leading graded trainer at Belle Vue. See here http://greyhoundstar.co.uk/jill-llewellin-2-tracks-7-meetings-90-dogs/
Ms Llewellin is also 'leading the charge' of the greyhound trainers fight against the closure of Belle Vue Greyhound Stadium https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/belle-vue-dog-trainers-launch-14939122
The video we shared is only a very brief extract of the evidence gathered for the investigation into Jill Llewellin's kennels
If anyone has any further evidence of the conditions in which greyhounds were being kept at these kennels or elsewhere please contact us confidentially via email with details so that we can take appropriate and lawful action to stop this abuse.

Greyhound breeding in China
We are continuing to find evidence of breeding kennels in mainland China.
Pro racers claim the dogs live like royalty. Well all these dogs have is the hope that one day they will be saved from this misery. The racing industry is now responsible for creating a whole new industry in China. The pro racing community sent greyhounds to China now the pro racing community are trying to condone their actions.
Dark bricked up kennels with no bedding, no temperature control, no standards. These greyhound pups will only know abuse, they will never be kept as a pet & they don't stand a chance. The breeders race dogs on concrete roads again risking the dogs of severe injuries.
These puppies face very uncertain future now greyhounds are the THIRD most popular breed at the meat markets.
This is the reality of commercial greyhound exports, the Australian, UK, Irish & US racing industry are directly responsible for creating a thriving industry in Mainland China

There is still time to sign & share our petition to demolish Belle Vie greyhound stadium https://www.change.org/p/jeni-regan-demolish-belle-vue-greyhound-stadium

A divide in the anti racing movement has been gradually exacerbated over the past 3 years.
The first event occured in 2016 when Caged intercepted 24 greyhounds on their way to Hong Kong
Caged received a pm tipping them off about the export
A handful of other indivuduals were also tipped off and had conversed with Caged as what should be done, but they were unable to physically act so Caged took on the responsibility of tracking down the exporters with the help of a few advocates.
Then came the biggest media storm since 2006. Photos and videos of what Caged had produced were brought to the publics attention.
Due to the pressure created by the media storm, the dogs were later returned to Ireland.
A brief speech was later delivered by Caged at an Irish anti racing protest. Caged chose not to mention any names of the other people who were tipped of, in fear of reprisals from the exporters, and instead offered them to announce their social media involvement themselves.
A couple of individuals took offence in that their names were not mentioned, and this began the divide.
Caged gave an interview to the MEN and spoke about laws in China, bringing up the dog meat trade.
It was clear to us, that if dogs were being shipped to Hong Kong that they could easily end up in Mainland China, as it neighbours Hong Kong.
Other anti groups claimed that there was no evidence of greyhounds in Mainland China or the dog meat trade.
Caged insisted that there was a very high possibility.
This caused arguments to break out between international groups on social media. Caged agreed not to mention the dog meat trade again.
Following this everyone tried to get along, until misinformation was shared via online articles by other groups claiming they had carried out the interception. On being asked to correct the information as it did not make sense, it was refused and instead turned into an altercation.
It was then that we began receiving messages about groups advising people not to trust us.
Other individuals began to turn on us claiming we were shamelessly fishing for donations when we posted links to our website information relating to greyhound abuse.
It was in 2017 when Caged visited China with a rescue group to discover dozens of greyhounds being held in Shanghai wildlife park. We then knew we had to look into greyhounds being exported to China, and by then the other groups had began to distance themselves from us.
We found chinese breeding databases with evidence of Irish and British greyhounds in China.
We have been continuing to bring reports of Irish, British and US dogs held in China, and began working with rescue to recover dogs.
We received rude messages from foreign groups claiming they knew about the exports in 2011.
It begs the question, if they knew, why did they not bring it to the attention of the public?
2 dogs, an Irish and a British raced greyhound have since been brought back to the UK.
This is 100% evidence that dogs were being shipped to China for many years before and at the time when we were asked by other groups not to discuss the dog meat trade.
There were negative remarks made by international and British groups due to one of the dogs costing a considerable amount of money.
We are aware the money was paid for the dog under the knowledge that this would bring 100% evidence home that greyhounds are being shipped to China. This dog remains the strongest piece of evidence against the industry exports and has confirmed our findings are correct, and in return he has a beautiful home and most importantly is now safe from being slaughtered for his flesh. He was sadly very emaciated and had to have all his teeth removed.
Greyhounds are also now being found in Chinese slaughterhouses (some proven to be the offspring of dogs exported for breeding) just as we sadly suspected for many years earlier.
To our dismay, misinformation continues to spread amongst the anti racing movement claiming racing is illegal in China. Greyhound racing is fully legal in China. Gambling is not legal but many tracks have been raided for illegal gambling.
Irish TDs have recently failed to introduce laws of a whitelist to try and reduce the exports.
In desperation we approached the GBGB, the greyhound racing industry regulators.
We asked that all greyhounds remain in the countries where they are bred and raced, being retained within Ireland and Great Britain.
The GBGB recently made a public announcement in the Greyhound Star, agreeing to work with Caged Nationwide based on preliminary inquiries made to Defra.
We initially asked the GBGB, that all exports are made illegal, and sanctions applied, with exception of dogs being transited between Ireland and Great Britain, as the British government recently announced they have no intention to ban racing.
Once again, individuals have been encouraged not to support us. Malicious articles and misinformation is being circulated on social media forcing us almost into closure.
We understand that the GBGB is probably the most hated organisation by all anti racing groups, but we are also aware that there can be no ban of exports without their cooperation.
We have since had a committee meeting and can announce that Caged will continue to campaign independently and will not bow down to slander.
The founders of Caged will withdraw their presence from social media, and will work to strengthen the campaign from behind the scenes, in research and development of the campaign.
Our team will be managing all posts on social media and will represent us as necessary.
We apologise for any confusion caused to all good advocates who support our work. We hope you appreciate our explanation.
All negative comments on Caged social media FB page, shall in future not be responded to, to avoid further conflict.
Thank you
