FAILURE TO HOME GREYHOUNDS RESPONSIBLY
AND ACCORDING TO RULE 18
AND ACCORDING TO RULE 18
IF YOU BECOME AWARE OF A GREYHOUND BEING ADVERTISED BY A GREYHOUND BREEDER OR TRAINER, PLEASE NOTIFY A REPUTABLE GREYHOUND RESCUE TO SEE IF THEY CAN HELP
Dogs are advertised by greyhound trainers, leaving them susceptible to falling into dangerous hands. Dogs could potentially end up being used as bait for dog fights, or dumped after being used for lamping.
It is vital that ALL greyhounds leaving the racing industry have a full assessment by a reputable greyhound breed rescue before homing takes place.
Greyhounds often need rehabilitating by an experienced rescue before being placed in a home. Greyhound trainer kennels do NOT usually provide a home environment and dogs may often be unable to safely transition directly from the racing industry to a home. If you choose to adopt a greyhound, it is necessary that you adopt from a reputable greyhound rescue for numerous reasons.
Dogs that have been used for racing often have a high prey drive as they are trained to chase the lure (artificial hare) whilst racing. Without the right guidance, you could find yourself in serious trouble with the law or, in an unfortunate situation where your new companion may be at threat of being destroyed if problems arise due to lack of assessment and any necessary rehabilitation to help safely transition a dog from the racing industry into a home environment.
You must also be given a home check to ensure that the dog is suited to your home, family, or other pets.
A home check alongside the correct advice and ongoing guidance that a good rescue would offer is imperative to ensure your new companion is happy and brings many years of joy and nice memories for you and your family.
Every greyhound trainer has the choice to relinquish their dogs to a reputable greyhound breed rescue and there is NO excuse to not to home them responsibly.
A reputable rescue will ALWAYS carry out a full home check and would assess the dog prior adoption, and provide any rehabilitation that a greyhound may need before transitioning from the greyhound racing industry to a home to avoid future problems or return of the dog. Rescue back up is essential in any unfortunate cases where the dog may need to be returned due to unforeseen circumstances.
If you are aware of a greyhound breeder or trainer flouting GBGB rules, by giving away dogs for free, or selling them to members of the public without a full home check and assessment to ensure the dog is safely homed - Please feel free to report this to us in full confidence at; [email protected]
