Henlow greyhounds - a grim track record of cruelty
is henlow about to be given the chop as
Planning gets accepted for new build?
In 2018 Henlow Stadium Promoter Kevin Boothby Greyhound Track Boss pledged to rehome all Henlows former raced dogs. Kevin Boothby told the Greyhound Racing Industries own online media publisher, The Greyhound Star, that he had reached an agreement with rescue kennel owner Johanna Beumer to exclusively rehome Henlow dogs. Viv Clements, racing fan told The Comet news that dogs raced at Henlow had always been rehomed after racing, and that Boothbys pledge had made it official.
Caged told the Comet that this was an unrealistic pledge. Evidence found in 2020 has unfortunately proven us to be correct.
Dog pedlar, Julianne Beale, admitted to Caged Nationwide during a recorded telephone conversation that she had been provided with a minimum of 50 greyhounds from trainers at Henlow track, and claimed she had been accepting them whilst un-neutered for several years.

Julianne Beale has been selling these dogs immorally from an address which we understand belongs to Sovereign Housing Association whilst using numerous online advertising websites such as Gumtree and Preloved to advertise the dogs.

Caged went undercover and arranged the purchase of 2 dogs from Ms Beale, neither dogs came neutered and no home check was offered, they did not come with any legitimate return policy, but instead we were provided with a scrap of paper with a scribbled signature and one month return policy, not worth the paper it was written on...shockingly the seller did not only state in writing that the dogs must not be returned after one month of purchase, but in addition, dogs must not be given to the RSPCA or any other rescue!
This concludes that a new owner has very limited options, if having difficulty with keeping their dogs after one month has subsided, and could very easily result in these dogs being destroyed.
We were offered one of these dogs specifically for breeding purposes. The dog was a one year old female Salems Madison and she was being advertised for £300 yet Ms Beale claims that she was not selling these dogs but homing them. Salems Madison earmark 'ZPAA' is a dog that has never raced but had been tattooed and registered to race. Julianne sent us a copy of the stud book. This dog was soon purchased by Greyhound Protection UK in order to save her from being exploited.
One of the dogs purchased by Caged was: 4 year old male, Tough Cain AKA Jet, ear mark 'RS VYJ' Last raced at Henlow on 24.7.20 by GE Elwell
Jet was flea infested but otherwise not in too bad condition, however he was not neutered.
Other dogs sold were;
Droopys Darren, DOB 1.9.15 Last raced at Yarmouth Greyhound Track - Trainer VK Thom
Alien Doug - aka Larry - DOB 24.09.16 Last raced at Henlow on 21.03.20, Trainer Anthony Tuffin
Another dog we were offered for breeding purposes was 4yr old female Manu Folly, last raced at Henlow on 1.09.20 where she was bumped; Trainer GE Elwell. We are unaware of what has happened to this dog or many others that Julianne has sold.
We have at least 4 names of greyhound trainers who's dogs had been advertised by this pedlar during September 2019.
GE ELWELL; Henlow
J PEARSON; Harlow
A TUFFIN; Henlow
VK Thom; Yarmouth

2 year old Clona Honey breaks her back at Henlow
December 2018 - 2 year old female dog, Clona Honey, bounced off the track rails breaking her back whilst being forced to race in treacherous weather conditions.
Caged Nationwide told, The Comet news, how they believed dogs were put in additional danger whilst racing due to a heavy downpour of rain that day. However, GBGB Ambassador Kelli Windebank hit back at Caged via a second publication in reaction to the embarrassing article, and argued that Caged did not care about the greyhounds, before continuing to make the following claims which we have found to be untrue.
Kelly claimed;
"Dogs at Henlow are retired when the time is right and suitable homes are found for them"
"The track is prepared well and it's the best place for dogs to run"
We have asked Kelli for a statement in response to the Henlow dogs we purchased from pedlar Julieanne Beale in relation to her earlier claims in The Comet publication, which presumably gave the impression to their readers that all Henlow greyhounds are safely homed when they finish racing. We are not expecting a reply.
