Greyhound Abuse
The Majority NOT a Minority
The Majority NOT a Minority
According to data gathered, almost half of the greyhounds bred to race are destroyed
In 2017, 16,000 greyhounds were bred in Ireland for Irish and British greyhound racing , and of these dogs a yearly average shows 6,000 (37.5%) were culled/destroyed in Ireland {according to a report published by Preferred Results Ltd and paid for by the Irish Greyhound Board}. 6,250 of the 10,000 remaining dogs were exported to Great Britain, leaving a remainder of just 3,750 dogs, that is a meagre 23.4% remaining alive from the 16,000 bred' in Ireland.
Whilst 83% of all British greyhounds are Irish bred, these figures verify that us Brits are the Irish greyhound racing industry's biggest motivation to exist'.
In addition, an absolute minimum of 1,100 greyhounds were destroyed in the UK (According to the Greyhound Board of Great Britain) amounting to a total of 7,100 (44.3%) greyhounds destroyed during 2017. Caged have maintained since 2012, that on average almost half the dogs bred for racing are destroyed. Thankfully RTE delivered a remarkable but also daunting exposure that substantiated our claims.
In 2017 the Irish racing pool only consisted of 3,616 greyhounds according to figures made public by Clare Daly TD, and following a question to the Dail in Ireland.
Whilst in 2016 a Parliamentary report stated there were 15,000 active racing greyhounds in Great Britain, that's more than four times the amount of greyhounds than remained in the Irish racing pool in 2017, with 83% of these dogs being Irish bred.
The racing pool is made up of all greyhounds who are registered to race, at any point of time
Based on these figures, we believe that the British people are maintaining the very existence of Irish greyhound racing, whilst in the process perpetuating the over-breeding of dogs, extensive suffering, and deaths of thousands of greyhounds every year. (Approximately half the greyhounds bred for racing are killed)
The Preferred results Ltd report was only made public by the Irish Greyhound Board after RTE claimed to have a copy. RTE were originally denied this report/data. (Please see the full documentary for more detail)

RTE Investigates revealed undercover footage of Greyhounds shot in the head at numerous knacker's yards (abattoirs) in Ireland. One dog defecated as he arrived at the knackery, then he was shot in the head and left writhing in agony. His owner coldly sat in his vehicle, and waited for the collar and lead to be returned, whilst the dog lay there slowly dying in agony.
RTE said out of 30 knackers yards that they contacted, 15 offered to kill greyhounds.
Knackers yards (Purveyors of Fallen Stock/abattoirs) in Great Britain
In 2009 Holts in Hertfordshire England, also admitted killing dogs by use of a bolt gun to the head, during an investigation by Daniel Foggo.
In 2006 David Smith from Seaham shot 10,000 greyhounds by bolt gun on a plot of land at the rear of his house. He received a fine of £2,000 for wrongful disposal but was never charged for animal cruelty. Today there falls a deadly silence over the area, there are no sounds of birds over the grave-yard, yet bizarrely there is a private children's play area now situated on the land where the dogs are buried. The captive bolt gun remains licensed for use on greyhounds in Great Britain, there is no requirement for training or to be licensed to use it to kill a greyhound, regardless of the suffering caused.
In 2012, we called British Knackers yards who told us they would kill greyhounds at £10 per head. Caged began a petition that has gathered almost 250,000 signatures. Defra previously claimed there is no evidence of widespread use of the captive bolt gun in Great Britain.
The Animal Welfare Act 2006 is clearly not sufficient to protect greyhounds.
